Diving into the Northlands
Heading to the Northlands, a week of snorkeling awaited me. As someone who has never snorkeled before, my love for the ocean combined with my childhood trauma of almost drowning made me both extremely excited and horrifically nervous.
New Zealand is one of the first places to utilize marine protected areas, a means of protected marine ecosystems from being overused and degraded by humans, and in some cases, repair marine ecosystems. The first marine reserve created within the nation is Goat Island, which was the first stop on our diving adventures.
Goat Island
The reserve is full of docile native fish, beautiful and luscious kelp beds, and if you look closely you may find some hidden marine friends, like urchins and octopi! The calm waters make for a great location for snorkelers of all levels to enjoy. Additionally, there is a Marine Discovery Center on-site to quench all of your scientific interests. This marine reserve is stunningly beautiful and an enjoyable experience for all ages. People will tell you the fish are so docile that you can even feed them, however, I strongly urge you to resist the urge to partake in this activity. Leave nature as it is and observe it in its natural state!
Poor Knights Islands
One of the most notable places to go diving in New Zealand, and even the world, is the Poor Knights Islands. I was given the incredible opportunity to experience the majestic beauty of this dive site. There is a bounty of tours that will take you out to the islands, allowing you to snorkel or dive the sites. There is so much to see amidst the mass of islands and intricate and unique geological forms. You won't want to miss any of it!
The islands are about an hour off of the coast of Tutukaka where most tours depart from, so along with the dive you will have the pleasure of experiencing a beautiful cruise through the ocean. Most tours will take you to numerous dive spots, and unique places in the area. The islands themselves have very special history to the native Maori, and it was fascinating to learn about.
This was my first time diving in open ocean, and while I was nervous, the crew made me feel extremely safe and protected under all circumstances, so rest assured you will be in safe hands. Regardless of your background and experience, I would definitely recommend taking advantage of this opportunity if it comes your way, as it truly is once in a lifetime!
