Kayaking the Coastal Marshes - Dennis, MA
Updated: Jan 7, 2021
If the Cape is good for anything, it is the perfect playground for outdoor and water activities of all types. From surfing and kiteboarding on the ocean waves to paddleboarding down the marshside rivers, biking along the coast, and exploring the many nature parks, there are countless opportunities for people of all interests to get active in the great outdoors.

One of the activities I look forward to most every year is kayaking along the many rivers within the wetlands of Cape Cod. Away from the harsh currents of the ocean, it makes for a serene and relaxing adventure that anyone can enjoy. One of my favorite spots to embark on kayaking endeavors is Swan River in South Dennis. With many launch sites along the river, as well as kayak and paddleboard rental shops available, there are many options at your disposal.

While bringing along my own gear is quite cost-effective and allows us to explore whichever region of the river we choose, renting is a great option as well. For a small price, you eliminate the time-consuming hassle of transporting equipment. Both options are great, it's simply what will work better for you!
In the past, I have gone to Cape Cod Waterways for kayak rentals, and the experience was excellent. Their prices are very affordable with many boating options available. The shop is right on the Swan River, making the entire experience hassle-free. Choose your desired option, hop in your kayak, enjoy your time on the river, and return when your time slot is up. Kayaking can be quite strenuous, often making it a quick activity. And going with a rental service allows for it to remain quick, leaving the remainder of the day open to other adventures.
I have also experienced bringing along my own gear. This was more enjoyable in terms of the ability to go to any desired destination, as well as the lack of a time constraint. However, transporting the gear was quite a hassle and took a large amount of time. If you are going to go this route and are not well versed in handling/transporting the equipment, be warned that it is not a task for the smaller framed or the weak. Though it can be done, it makes it significantly more difficult. Although, you will still get a fun day of kayaking out of it!
