The Hotel Alyeska - Girdwood, AK
The Hotel Alyeska. Although a ski resort in the winter, the hotel still holds many treasures for those that visit in the summer months.
The mountain is used as a ski resort in the winter, and during the fall, the trails are used as mountain biking trails. Unfortunately, during the short time we were at the resort, the trails were not open for mountain biking. Although, I would have loved to have done it.
They are known for their tramway that brings you up the side of the mountain, about 2,300 ft (you can also choose to hike up if that's your thing). From there, it seems as if you can see for miles upon miles. The mountains surrounding the area are topped with glaciers, and the Cook Inlet can be see in the distance. You have the opportunity to dine at the top of the mountain, as a variety of bars and restaurants, both casual and more upscale, reside at the top of the mountain so you can dine with a view. And let me tell you, the view is damn worth every penny. Well, unless you are terrified of heights like my mother.
We dined at the hotel restaurant, Aurora, and were quite impressed with what we got. Everything was homemade, and tasted delicious! And not to mention the presentation was spectacular. We also enjoyed a breakfast at the hotel's Pond Cafe, which is where I tried the infamous Alaskan reindeer sausage. My parents didn't mind it, but I have to say I am not a fan of the taste.
