Welcome to Homer, Alaska!
For those that do not know what incited this trip to Alaska in the first place, I will be living in Homer, Alaska from now until December. As a student studying zoology in university, I have come to Homer for a marine biology focused program, Semester by the Bay, and I have arrived early to get acquainted with the small seaside town.
Homer is known for being the halibut fishing capital of the world. The main attraction of the town is the famous Homer Spit, a strip of land surrounded by water on both sides, with shops, seafood restaurants, and fishing boat companies, among many other eclectic things, lining both sides. We spent a while exploring the spit, however, our options were limited. And this is where the irony kicks in. I am severely allergic to fish. Like it could kill me. You can only imagine how the people at restaurants looked at me when I questioned if they could accommodate my allergy.
We ended up in town at AJ's Oldtown Steakhouse and Tavern. The place was very busy, which was a promising sign for us newbies. As a family, we were able to try a variety of foods on the menu. From steak filet, to scallops, and chicken caesar salad, everything was absolutely delicious!
My first day in Homer was a success, and I look forward to all that is to come!
