White Mountain Foliage
Updated: Jun 9, 2021
If New England is known for anything come autumn it is the spectacular foliage views. For the first time in a while I was spending my fall semester in New Hampshire with a close friend who is a New Hampshire native. That being said, I nearly begged him to take me to see the fall foliage. And if I didn't have to hike that was just a bonus. The destination: The Kancamangus Highway.
The Kancamangus is a scenic highway that drives through the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Come autumn, the bounty of oaks, birch, and various deciduous trees create the most beautiful golden landscape. It is a stunning drive in itself, but there are multiple viewpoints to stop at along the way that make it not just a scenic drive, but a whole adventure.
You are guaranteed stunning views of the fall foliage mountains if you take this route, and I definitely recommend it to anyone that is up for it, especially if you are opposed to hiking like myself but love a good view.
However, be warned that it is an extremely popular destination for all New Englanders to peep the fall foliage that is not present in their area. So you may get stuck in a lot of traffic or be surrounded by crowds of people. My visit up north ended in an agonizing 3 hours of traffic, which followed crowded resting stations. However, I still enjoyed my time and the impeccable views. My love for fall made the journey worth it.
